Early on in 7^th and 8^th grade, I realized that biology is my passion. Guided and inspired by a wonderful teacher, biology class was fun. Often times when the weather was nice, we went for short excursions to the nearby park to learn about trees and flowers, vegetation, and environment. By sensing and touching the material comprehension was simple. After finishing high school I decided to study biology. Although the curriculum was intense, I enjoyed my studies being exposed to zoology, botany, genetics, microbiology, cell biology, biochemistry and other subjects like mathematics, physics, and chemistry. After the first two years, I was allowed to “real” laboratories and was exposed to basic research in genetics. I was thriving, and research scientist eventually became my profession.

In 1997, I joined a research group at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. Later, I joined Baylor College of Medicine investigating the ‘early events happening in a cell leading to breast cancer.’ Together with students and postdocs, technician and other research scientists we were interested in many aspects of breast cancer.

Guiding students in their methodology and approach of finding their research topic, and designing experiments to proof their hypotheses was one of many highlights of being a mentor and teacher.

I've had success over the past 10 years in helping K-6th grade students get past that difficult "beginner" stage, as well as guiding high-school and college students as they prepare for the next step in their education and career in music. I've also taught plenty of adult beginners looking to learn the guitar with a broad, well-rounded approach. As a performer I've been playing guitar and bass for 20 years in a variety of settings, from solo recitals, to small bars and larger nightclubs, to jazz clubs and outdoor festivals. I also play piano and drums.

I am skilled at many styles, but especially the many facets of rock/blues/pop and jazz. I offer fun, thoughtful, expert instruction to students of all levels: everything from simple rock, blues, or folk songs and licks to more advanced areas, including jazz improvisation and soloing over chord changes, scale and chord theory, transcription, ear training, and composition.

I have a genuine love of teaching music and seek to provide my students with a warm and encouraging atmosphere, allowing for the discovery of self-exploration and expression through music.

Venezuelan flutist, conductor, composer, and teacher with a solid career in the classical and popular genres. The music career of Nicolas Real begun in the National Youth Orchestra System (El Sistema) of Venezuela, organization in which reaffirms his talent and founds the base of his formation as a classical musician. His registered experience leads him to become a member of the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra and other musical chamber groups such as Miquirebo Flute Quartet of Venezuela, National Flute Orchestra of Venezuela, and the Real-Peña Duo, amongst others. The praxis has been complimented by his academic studies. In 1991 he obtains the Bachelor Degree in Flute Performance from the University Institute of Musical Studies – IUDEM in Venezuela. Later in 2003, he obtains the Masters Degree in Flute Performance from Central Michigan University. He currently resides in the United States and is nearly concluding his Doctorate Degree in Musical Art from Temple University in (Philadelphia, PA). Nicolas Real won the first place in the "Concerto Aria Competition - 2002" at Central Michigan University and in August of the same year, he made his debut at the Hirshhorn Hall of the Smithsonian Institute of Washington D.C. He also participated in the National Flute Convention, achieving 1st place in the Performer Competition. In the composition arena, his pieces for flute and chamber instruments have been performed by important and distinguished chamber ensembles both in Venezuela and in the USA, to mention a few: the Massachusetts Flute Choir, the Crescent Duo (flute and clarinet), the Venezuela National Flute Orchestra, and the Miquirebo flute Quartet of Venezuela. In a different facet, he has been guest conductor of various symphony and chamber groups in Venezuela and USA, demonstrating his mastery of the classical and popular repertoire interpretation. In 2004, Mr. Real produced his first CD as a soloist titled “Nicolas Real-Music from Eastern Venezuela” in which he explores the musical wealth of the eastern region of his beloved Venezuela. Currently, Nicolas Real is the Principal flute at the Florida Lakes Symphony Orchestra, Founder Conductor and Artistic Director of Entrevoces Choir, Associate Director of the Amundos Youth Choir, and a successful freelance flutist in Florida and Philadelphia.

Katherine Farnham’s early musical training came primarily at the hands of her classical musician parents. Betty Farnham was a concert pianist and served as Director of The New England Conservatory's Wellesley Branch for almost a decade. Dr. Dean Farnham was a trombonist who played with Arthur Fielder and The Boston Pops, The Baltimore Symphony and The Sante Fe Opera, and premiered works by the legendary Igor Stravinsky as well as American composer Paul Hindemith. Katherine studied piano with her mother from the ages of 5 to 17. As a teenager, she received scholarships to Boston University Tanglewood Institute’s highly competitive Young Artists Piano Program. She studied for two summers as one of thirty-two young artists from around the globe. Additional studies were with Eugene Pridonoff at Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Master classes include those with well-known concert pianists Leon Fleischer and Gilbert Kallish.

Katherine has served on the Faculty of Sound Art Los Angeles, Musicians Institute of Technology in Hollywood, The Boston Music Company, Sdoia-Satz Music Institute in Miami, Migonoff Performing Arts Academy in Boca Raton, FL, and the acclaimed New World School of the Arts BFA Music Theatre Division. She has also maintained a successful private studio in Boston, Miami and Los Angeles. Her students aged 4 to 75 give testimony to her patience, intuitive connection with students, artistic passion and most of all, her ability to produce results.

Katherine's uniqueness also lies in her ability to seamlessly integrate her classical background with her undeniable contemporary style. I am a music educator from Chicago, who teaches general music in Chicago Heights School District 170. I graduated from Vandercook College of Music with a Bachelors in Music Education. My primary instrument was voice (I am a coloratura soprano) and my secondary instrument is trumpet. I have been playing the trumpet since I was 8 years old, and singing for as long as I can remember. Originally I was born and raised in Michigan, and came to Illinois for college. During my years in Michigan I was involved in professional organizations such as the Battle Creek Girls Chorus for 10 years, and the Battle Creek Youth Orchestra as their principal trumpet player for 3 years. I have experiences working with children, adolecents, and some adults. I currently hold an Illinois teaching certficate, and have been cleared with the Illinois State Police to teach in the school systems. As such I've spent my life asking questions and, as I got older, answering them. I've taught creative writing in youth workshops, schools and camps and think that it is the most fun that a person can have. I started playing piano at the age of four: on a toy piano Santa brought me one year for Christmas. When my mother noticed I was able to play the melodies from my Sesame Street record collection, she decided to get me formal lessons. I loved it! And I can still remember my wonderful piano teacher, Mrs. Cleveland.

I also loved to sing, so when I discovered the musical Annie, I took it to an entirely new level. I had Annie clothes and Annie lunch boxes, and when I sang the song Tomorrow in the school talent show, I made my mother sew me an actual Annie dress. (Which I still have, by the way.)

I continued on with music throughout high school, (being awarded "The Most Outstanding Bandsman"- no one needs to know that) and eventually went to the Boston Conservatory of Music, where I majored in Musical Theatre and Music.

In addition to performing, the reason I enjoy teaching is because I really enjoy inspiring and encouraging young talent the way that I was encouraged. Whether or not someone chooses to pursue music professionally doesn't matter: simply having an appreciation and understanding of music can really shape and enhance one's life.

Life has come a bit full circle...I also became an audio producer in nyc for the Children's Publishing industry, writing and producing music for clients- which included Sesame Street! In addition to that, I just published a children's book enititled, Emma's Pet Piranha and Other Amazing Adventures.
